The green economy is our long-term strategic direction and represents an opportunity for the development of new green technologies, the creation of green jobs, more efficient management of natural resources, the promotion and development of Slovenian knowledge. It is an opportunity to grow the economy and strengthen international competitiveness while reducing environmental risks that negatively affect people’s quality of life and well-being.
With its location on the strait between the Alps and the northernmost bay of the Mediterranean Sea, Slovenia is one of the most important European crossings from southwestern Europe to the east. Slovenia is characterized by great landscape diversity, which is the result of the confluence of different climatic and geomorphological characteristics of the Alpine, Mediterranean and Pannonian world and various cultural influences. Slovenia lies at the crossroads of two international transport corridors, and the port of Koper is an important national and international freight transport hub and seaport due to its geostrategic location. Among the natural resources, the most important are its forest cover, water content and preservation of watercourses, karst characteristics and karst phenomena, as well as biodiversity and landscape diversity.
Slovenia is extremely rich in water, it is one of the smallest countries in Europe, but in terms of water resources it is among the richest, it also has a high quality of surface water, which is maintained and improved. Forests, which cover 60% of the total area, are an important natural resource, and Slovenia also has many preserved natural areas and geothermal springs, where it develops various forms of tourism. Natural resources represent a great advantage for the transition to renewable energy sources, resource efficiency, development of green services and jobs. Many Slovenian companies have already developed new solutions for their production processes, which are examples of good practices of green companies or the transition to circular production models. In Slovenia we have a lot of knowledge and many highly developed solutions in the field of technologies (energy efficient construction, cooling and heating, materials…), innovations in the field of waste processing into target uses (insulation materials), innovations in the field of smart services. We must actively support the further development of these advantages, both in the direction of marketing knowledge and innovation and in the direction of upgrading technologies, processes, digital solutions and services.
Slovenia’s focus on the green economy, with the aim of prudent use of natural resources, improving energy efficiency and process efficiency, and the transition from linear to circular models of the economy, strengthens our competitiveness. The transition to a green economy requires, among other things, changing today’s production patterns and consumption patterns to greener and more sustainable forms, supporting economic incentives and developing less environmentally damaging technologies and innovations, improving resource management and land, water, waste and energy management policies. By implementing the measures envisaged in the Framework Program, the country will create appropriate conditions for sustainable growth and development and guide the process of transition to a green economy.
