EUR4.5 million for energy efficiency in Portugal

On September 2, 2020, the Portuguese government launched a new energy-efficiency program. The Programa de Apoio Edifícios mais Sustentáveis includes various incentives to promote the energy efficiency of buildings and their decarbonization and has a total volume of EUR 4.5 million (EUR 1.75 million in 2020 and EUR 2.75 million in 2021).

Several types of thermal insulation, air conditioning and heating systems, renewable energy, and water efficiency systems are eligible for the support. The program is aimed at private citizens who own apartments or private homes that were built by the end of 2006. Applicants can receive subsidies of up to 70% of the costs of their retrofit and renovation measures, with upper limits established for each type of project. Owners of single-family homes or apartments can receive up to EUR 7,500, while the total subsidy per applicant is limited to a maximum of EUR 15,000.

The housing sector is responsible for more than 30% of the energy consumption in Portugal. Energy-efficiency retrofits are therefore considered a way to reduce energy bills, meet climate objectives, and create employment. Portugal is expected to receive significant funds from the European Economic Recovery Program to support energy-efficiency projects and the decarbonization and rehabilitation of residential and non-residential buildings.
